Parigot, with Iridesco

It's a lousy day to wander around for a birthday lunch, but the perfect day to pop on down the block to Parigot with our favorite neighborhood lunchmates, Iridesco. Parigot seems rather out of place on the corner of Grand and Lafayette so we were happy to discover moderately priced, very solid French bistro food. Of everything we tried, the merguez sandwiches were most satisfying, with a spicy kick. We might just be back here again.

4:00pm tiger eyes

Bleech! Patooey! Yuk! Something horribly amok with the tiger eye pastries from Tisserie today. As if someone with soapy perfumed hands touched them all over and then sold them to us.

Il Corallo Trattoria, with Michael and Ray

We've never been to Il Corallo before but it was recommended by a friend, so we figured it was a good place to meet a new friend (Michael Surtees of the esteemed DesignNotes) while connecting with an old one (Ray Cha of weatherpattern). The rather overwhelming menu of over 50 pastas entrees had us a little confused at first but eventually we settle down to the real business of lunch - making connections. Over some decent pasta selections we meandered around the country, talking about why we love Pittsburgh (but not Ray), what to do in Minneapolis, living in Saskatchewan and of course how small New York can be.

4:00pm peanut butter ball

It seems that homemade peanut butter cups (or balls) are on everyone's mind these days as we've seen them starting at Joe's a couple weeks ago, Bouchon this past Monday and now a fresh batch from City Girl Cafe. Today's peanut butter delight is definitely meant to be shared or eaten with a tall glass of milk. The rich dark chocolate and salty peanut butter combo is intense!

Mangia, with Audio Unlimited

Another lunch and learn today brought to us courtesy of Audio Unlimited and Mangia. One continuing education credit, tasty sandwiches from Mangia and a crash course in the latest audio-visual technologies like 3-d projection - all for the measly price of one hour of our time. Seems pretty fair to me.

4:00pm florentine cookie

Thomas Keller must have fun with his desserts, reinterpreting things like Oreos or Nutter Butters into his own fancy versions. But the Florentine cookie we picked up yesterday does not seem like a typical Florentine. Maybe it's named for something or someone else?

J. Marc

Finally a nice spring day to wander around looking for something good to eat. We head southwest towards Tribeca and stumble upon an odd one - a Korean restaurant, newly opened, called J. Marc. Aside from the pricey dishes and nothing remarkable decor, the food was pretty tasty and the service friendly. There are not so many Korean restaurants down here that we can be picky so J. Marc is sure to merit another visit.

4:00pm chocolate chip cookie

Not a great day for an outdoor photo shoot but at least it wasn't raining! And thanks to the generosity of a fellow archi on the shoot, we bring you dessert from the still-under-construction Alice Tully Hall.

Bread
The cold negative gray weather was too daunting earlier; instead we order in from Bread hoping for a hot toasty lunch. Over an hour later we got room temperature pasta. Figures! It's Monday after all.
